The Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty was created in 1965 recognising that this is one of the finest landscapes in the country and deserves to be protected at the highest level.
It is an area of chalk hills to the North West and West of London covering over 660 square miles of deciduous woodland, open grassland, fields and traditional villages. It extends from Whipsnade in the North to Goring on Thames in the South, a distance of about 45 miles and cuts through parts of Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire.
